Diploma Program – CIP Code: 51.0713
The Medical Office/Insurance and Coding Specialist program provides the opportunity to specialize in the medical clerical field with an emphasis on insurance coding and billing. Students receive a strong clerical foundation in business computer applications and business communications as a prerequisite for specializing in medical office procedures and insurance billing.
In addition to learning medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic and procedural coding as it relates to the accurate completion of medical insurance claims, students will gain proficiency using the MediSoft Suite – the powerful electronic management program used by today’s health care providers. The coding labs are equipped with workstations, internet access, ten-key calculators, MediSoft and MS Office software applications, and reference materials.
Students are trained for entry level positions as medical clerical professionals and medical insurance coding specialists in a variety of settings: physicians’ offices, outpatient clinics, hospitals, and health insurance companies. Students that successfully complete the Medical Office/Insurance & Coding Specialist program begin careers as medical records, medical billing, and medical receptionist; while others decide to continue their education into the Associate of Occupational Studies ~ Medical Office Administration program.
This program prepares students to sit for national certification exams as a Medical Office Assistant and Insurance and Coding Specialist through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) and national certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). A diploma is awarded upon satisfactory completion of college graduation requirements. Students can elect to extern at no extra cost.
