The Associate in Occupational Studies – Administrative Medical Assistant program equips the student with clinical, administrative, and advanced medical clerical skills to handle and manage all of the responsibilities of the medical office except those requiring the services of a physician or other licensed personnel.

In addition to the strong foundation of nursing and medical assisting clinical skills involved in direct patient care, the Administrative Medical Assistant is trained to be an insurance specialist, financial secretary, billing and collection specialist, office manager and administrative medical assistant.

During the first quarter, students who complete all of the state competency skills above the established criteria, demonstrate proficiency of vital signs, and score a minimum of 75% on the CNA Exit Exam will be eligible to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and listed on the Louisiana State Nurse Aide Registry.

In addition to learning medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and diagnostic and procedural coding as it relates to the accurate completion of medical insurance claims, students will gain proficiency using the MediSoft Suite – the powerful electronic management program used by today’s health care providers.

The students will be trained for intermediate level employment in a variety of settings: physicians’ offices, outpatient clinics, hospitals, health maintenance organizations (HMO), nursing homes, home health care services, hospices, group homes, rehabilitation centers, hospital laboratories, and area blood banks. This program prepares students to sit for national certification exams through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) and the American Academy of Professional Coders. An Associate in Occupational Studies – Administrative Medical Assistant Degree is awarded by the college upon satisfactory completion of all graduation requirements.
